Elizabeth Peirce: Independent Publishing Coach

The world of publishing is changing. Let me help you navigate it!

You’ve written a book! Congratulations! It’s time to think about next steps….

Seeing your book through to publication takes time, patience, and perseverance. And finding the right publisher can be a notoriously lengthy and frustrating process.

As an author, I have experience of both traditional and independent publishing. As a consultant, I can take you through the process of becoming a self-published author and seeing your work in print sooner.

Here’s how:

1. Manuscript review:

I will review your manuscript and offer a general assessment of its strengths and weaknesses to help you with your revision process. Once revised, your manuscript comes back to me for a copy edit.

*Note: I charge an hourly fee of $75/hour for the review + copy edit.

2. Cover and interior design:

I will send your manuscript to a designer who will offer suggestions for a cover, based on your vision for your book. The designer will send a preliminary cover design for you to tweak and approve. They will also send us a file with interior layout for you to approve. We will discuss physical book size, as well as the “look” you’d like it to have.

*Note: The designer’s fee is separate from my fee, and usually ranges from $300-$1000, depending on the complexity of the project.

3. ISBN and UPC codes

These codes are necessary when you are selling your book, whether online or in real bookstores; I will obtain both for you.

4. Back-cover blurb (100-200 words) + author bio (50-150 words)

I will write important back cover material to let the world know about you and your masterpiece!

5. Book printing (* if required)

I will explain the pros and cons of doing a print run (where you print large numbers of your book at one time) or choosing a print on demand service (where individual copies of your book can be ordered by customers online). Some authors choose both!  I will help you to set up an account with one or both services and will make arrangements to have files delivered and books shipped to you.

6. E-book services (* if required)

If you choose to have an e-book only, I will help you make sure it’s in the correct format (if you choose to sell via Amazon or other online distributor) and explain the royalty system for independent authors selling their work online or in bookstores.

7. Illustration (for children’s books)

I will help you find an illustrator for your children’s book, and can act as the contact person during the creation of original artwork for your book, if you are busy. Illustrators usually charge anywhere from $50 to $200 per full-colour illustration.

What my clients are saying:

“Elizabeth Peirce has been of inestimable value to me over the years, both as a researcher, an editor and as a proof-reader. I could not have finished Black Loyalists without her help; her knowledge of eighteenth-century terminology, for example, was tremendously useful, as well as being a skill unusual in this day and age. She is well-read, responsible, and fast while being accurate. I rely on her expertise, and I trust her judgement.”

-Dr. Ruth Holmes Whitehead, Order of Nova Scotia, author of Black Loyalists

“I have had the pleasure of working with Elizabeth for both my novels. Their success is due in no small part to her keen eye as an editor and honest appraisal of content. She completes her work in a timely fashion and I have always found her to be very professional. As both an author and an editor, she is uniquely qualified to bring out the best in each cherished manuscript.”

-Kathy Chisholm, author of Urban Tigers.

“Doing my thesis in Canada was only possible with the support of Elizabeth Peirce, who helped walk me through the mysteries of the English language and the structure of academic writing (as English is not my first language). Elizabeth helped me from the first draft to the end of my thesis. She always understood my needs and went beyond, anticipating the changes that should be made. With her professionalism, punctuality, and competence, I could finish my thesis on time. I strongly recommend Elizabeth's services.”

-Marcia Dos Santos, Master of Arts in Education candidate

“No detail is too small for Elizabeth’s discerning eye – she doesn’t miss a thing when she’s editing and proofreading!”
